He achieved great mainstream success, with well over 100 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Lil Wayne, also called Weezy, was born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., on September 27, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He came to the attention of Cash Money Records head Bryan (“Birdman”) Williams. Lil Wayne soon became a member—along with Juvenile, B.G., and Young Turk—of the label’s all-star group Hot Boys. The Hot Boys won notice for the albums Get It How U Live! (1997) and Guerrilla Warfare (1999). Lil Wayne’s first solo album, Tha Block Is Hot, arrived later in 1999 and sold more than a million copies. However, two subsequent releases—Lights Out (2000) and 500 Degreez (2002)—were less successful. In 2003 Lil Wayne released his first underground mixtape, Da Drought. (In the early 21st century the term mixtape typically referred to a recording produced and distributed outside official music-industry channels, often as a free Internet download.) His 2004 album Tha Carter reached number five on the Billboard 200 chart and produced a hit single, “Go DJ.” During this time Lil Wayne began creating lyrics that were both profound and clever and that spoke to a wide range of people. His contribution in 2004 to the single “Soldier” (by Destiny’s Child) was the first in a long line of guest performances with other artists. He released two popular mixtapes before delighting audiences with the critically praised album Tha Carter II (2005), which sold more than one million records.
