The Santa Talk: How I Learned to Talk to Kids About Santa

Parent’s love for me. I was emotionally safe. Again, Santa Claus isn’t the issue here; it’s the overall quality of our relationship with our kids.4. Teach your kids about the real St. Nicholas. The term Santa Claus is derived from the name St. Nicholas, a real and revered 4th century Christian saint, who became known for secretly giving gifts to others. Note: He gave presents to people not based on their behavior, but to secretly bless them.5. Focus on Jesus’ birth. No matter your personal convictions about Santa Claus, spend more time talking about Jesus’ birth than jolly ‘ole St. Nick.Through advent, we teach our kids about the 25 characters of the Christmas story. If he comes to their school or we see him in a Christmas movie, we talk about Santa, but we also use him as a way to point our kids to Jesus. And yes, we also put out milk and cookies the night before Christmas. But it pales in comparison to the birthday party our family holds for Jesus.6. Focus on imagination. What my mother-in-law did with my wife, Christi, and her siblings growing up is exactly what we do in our house. They played Santa. And when it came time for the kids to ask if Santa was real, her answer was simply, “Santa is pretend. And in our house, we pretend.”7. But what about the elf on the shelf, you ask? It’s too much work. Santa has enough to do this Christmas. For another take on Santa, see Katie Orr’s post, “Why We Chose to Keep Santa Out of Our Christmas.”. Can I talk to Santa online? With Alfred Stieglitz?” And she goes, “I don’t know. That’s your job.”And it is my job. So I did a little bit of research and I found out that she took this train ride and I went back to the composer and said, “I want to set this opera on the three-day train ride that she took with Rebecca Strand back from New York to Santa Fe.” In the case of Georgia O’Keeffe, of course, being on this train was a big deal for her. It was *the* moment.I wrote an opera, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, for Santa Fe Opera, and that actually starts where the main character recognizes his own mortality in 2007 and circles back on the events of his life. That is what we call the “inciting incident,” so I look for that.Rely on experiential researchAs experiential research for Today It Rains, I myself took that same train ride that Georgia O’Keeffe took. The train goes up to New York, it goes across the lake, it goes to Chicago. Since there’s a layover, I visited the Art Institute of Chicago, which has great Georgia O’Keeffe works. But then I got back on the train and headed to Santa Fe and I wrote Georgia’s last aria, when she’s approaching Santa Fe, right on that train. I wanted to see what it felt like. And there’s a big difference in approaching Santa Fe from the train than there is from approaching it from Albuquerque. It’s not quite as romantic.Ask for helpI’ve also written an opera called As One which is about a transgender person. I mean, talk about a trajectory or transformative moment! I was very lucky to be working with Kimberly Reid, who is transgender herself and a beautiful writer. They asked me to join the team,

We don’t quite agree with the physical reality of Telstra’s cute little Santa idea. A Telstra spokesperson told Pickr that:“As for public health and safety, we encourage people to follow local health advice when using payphones, in the same way they would with any public space.”That’s especially important these days, even with the TGA expecting vaccines to be rolled out to children from January onwards, after the December 24 end date of its Santa stunt. For now, however, we have another idea.Use a Santa calling app insteadRather than rely on a huge question mark of sharing germs and such, especially as another Covid variant begins to creep its way through the community, parents may want to consider a personalised approach using a Santa call app. Similar to how Telstra’s Santa calling works, whereby a voice is waiting to talk to kids at the end of a phone call, video call Santa apps can bring home the message that Santa is talking to them, either by calling a parent’s phone or having the parent call them, and possibly involving a topic beyond what the child wants for Christmas. They might cover going to bed on time, being naughty, or something else, and while it may cost a little more than the free call cost Telstra’s payphone call comes with, it also means not having to touch a payphone, replacing it with something potentially more personalised. Video Call Santa apps are available across both Android and iOS, but may require a bit of trial and error until you find one suitable for your children, though does mean you won’t have to go looking for a phone booth, or even cleaning one before use.

The impact COVID-19 is having on our lives has gone just too far now, with Kids unable to sit on Santa’s lap for the annual big fat jolly fellow photo. Facebook to the rescue, with a direct line established between Santa and your kids – if you agree. It’s actually a very, VERY cool idea. You as a parent, the very one who setup the Messenger Kids account for your child need to set this all up.To Setup Santa in Facebook Messenger you go to this site. There, any child who’s account you setup will show.Alternatively, on your smartphone:Open your Messenger app Tap on your child’s profileTap “Messenger Kids Controls”Tap “Controls”In this list, find “Santa Experience,” and then “Add Santa.”If you’re missing a child, check your partner’s phone, for me, I was unable to setup my Daughter, but on my wife’s account I was. Simple. At this point Santa appears as a contact on your child’s device:And on your phone, the Child’s own Santa message thread appears:This is so you can monitor what the kids are telling Santa, because it’s important parents talk about expectations, so as not to overwhelm Santa or his elves.Fortunately, if your child and Santa are in a detailed conversation back and forth, you won’t get all the notifications, you’ll see them when you next open the app.So, your kids can chat to Santa, you can see what Santa is saying to the kids just like you would any other messages you send within the app – except of course, in this case, it’s Santa sending the messages – you just get to see them.Brilliant work Facebook!Trev is a Technology Commentator, Dad, Speaker and Rev Head.He produces and hosts two popular podcasts, EFTM and Two Blokes Talking Tech. He also appears on over 50 radio stations across Australia weekly,. Can I talk to Santa online? Jumping Jingle Bells! Santa would love to talk to you online! Storey time with Santa, Santa reads I want to be an elf

We just spent our Thanksgiving weekend at a hotel that’s Christmas-themed year round. During story time with Santa, the children gathered around his feet to hear him sing songs and tell stories. In the one hour he spent with them, who did he talk and sing about most? Not Rudolph. Not even Mrs. Claus. Instead, he talked about Jesus. And he sang multiple birthday songs to Jesus. Our kids loved that even Santa focused so much on Jesus. That’s a weird mix for many of us. As a dad of a 6- and 4-year-old, this is a question we continually pray about for ourselves on a personal level.Perhaps you too wonder whether you should conform to the holiday tradition of Santa Claus celebrated around the world. Logically speaking, your concerns are warranted. If we lie to our kids about Santa, then perhaps they will think we lied to them about Jesus as well.Yet, some of my greatest childhood memories were baking cookies and putting out milk for Santa. It wasn’t until I was in second grade sitting at the lunch table that one of my best friends broke the news. I defended Santa as fiercely as a 7-year-old could. Were my parents wrong for lying to me?Research from two psychologists just last year, suggest that lying to our children about Santa Claus could expose our children to “abject disappointment.”As Kathy McKay, co-author of the study, said: “The Santa myth is such an involved lie, such a long-lasting one, between parents and children, that if a relationship is vulnerable, this may be the final straw. If parents can lie so convincingly and over such a long time, what else can they lie about?”If you go along with the Santa tradition like most families do, take heart. I’m grateful my parents went along

Northern France, but has different names depending on where it is produced - I know I know European old world wine is confusing - I don't make the rules I just educate the people on them haha this tressallier is made by Domaine de beroiles and coming from the Loire valley, so it's going to have all that nice acidity and floral herbaceous notes that we associate with Loire valley whites. RT: So many grapes, so little time.GH: Haha totally. But, when we get into the richer fish dishes, I'm thinking something with some weight to it. I saw that they have a Condrieu on the menu from Pierre Galliard from the Rhone valley in France, which is very high-end viognier. There are some wines that you’ll never forget your first time experiencing them, and that was me with condrieu - it was like tasting liquid gold, and that is still how I describe it today. If you're feeling chardonnay, they have a ton to pick from depending on what country and what style. One that stuck out to me was the 2020 Ojai vineyard Bien Nacido chardonnay from Santa Barbara. and I'm about to humble brag here, but I actually helped in making that exact wine! I worked the 2020 vintage at Ojai vineyards which is a lovely little valley town located north of LA county and just south of Santa Barbara. The head wine maker Adam Tolmach has been producing Burgundian-style wines from high-end central California vineyards since the 80s, and I literally will drink anything he makes. Shout out to you Adam and the whole Ojai fam! Love y’all RT: Oh man you’re making me want to book a ticket to California Grace haha. Now we’re at a steak house. So, we have to talk about red.
