Grand Rapids will be recognized for two of its digital transformation projects at the Smart 50 Awards, which recognizes cities worldwide. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The City of Grand Rapids will be recognized for two of its innovations at a conference that recognizes "smart cities" worldwide. The Smart 50 Awards will honor Grand Rapids for the GR PayIt service and the Emergency Vehicle Digital Alerting with HAAS Alert at a conference in April. However, the teams behind the smart mobility and digital transformation projects were honored by the Grand Rapids Manager and the City Commission Tuesday morning for their award-winning work. GR PayIt allows Grand Rapids residents to make payments for water, refuse, property taxes, parking tickets and community development loans. “GR PayIt has transformed how residents interact with their government and has drastically improved our service to the community,” said City Treasurer John Globensky. “This program makes it easier for residents to pay their bills, decreasing mailed checks and trips to City Hall.” Grand Rapids is focusing on using technology systems to provide excellent, equitable and innovative solutions to the community, a press release from the city explained. Another technological transformation project created by city employees will be honored at the awards in Denver and was applauded by Grand Rapids leaders at the ceremony on Tuesday. The Emergency Vehicle Digital Alerting with HAAS Alert system alerts drivers via navigation apps such as Waze when emergency vehicles have to speed down the roads. Drivers about upcoming emergency situations is a good thing. “This type of technology can help save the lives of drivers and emergency personnel responding to incidents by alerting traffic of emergency vehicles stopped in or traveling on the roadway," said Dave Schnurstein. Throughout the past year, nearly 200,000 Grand Rapids drivers received alerts about nearby emergency vehicles, according to a press release from the city. Among these hundreds of thousands of drivers are people who are deaf or hard of hearing. “They have to be especially careful at intersections and use other senses no matter how loud sirens get or how bright they make lights. These alerts add an important layer of safety for them," said Grand Rapids Assistant Fire Chief Brad Brown. Grand Rapids has been recognized for its innovations in previous years. The City also received the City Government Experience Award for the GR PayIt service, was named the Nation's Top Data-Driven City and was honored with the Utility of the Future Today award. PayIt - Congratulations to the The City of Grand Rapids'.
By Heidi Fenton | [email protected] MICHIGAN -- The bone-chilling cold Friday morning was enough to close many area schools, but not quite enough to break a record for the all-time low Feb. 20.That record was set in 1966 with a low temperature of -13 degrees. Grand Rapids tied that record overnight with -13 degree temperatures beginning at 11:53 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19.Elsewhere, Baldwin recorded an actual low temperature of -33 degrees and Reed City, -28 degrees, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Bill Marino. The wind chill in Reed City reached -45 degrees overnight and a wind chill of -34 degrees was recorded at the Big Rapids airport, Marino said. For those wondering, the all-time lowest actual temperature ever recorded in Grand Rapids was -24 degrees in February 1899. During the week of Feb. 13 and 14 that year, Grand Rapids recorded five days of temperatures at least 20 degrees below zero. So comparatively, what we are experiencing now isn't quite so bad.But in the past 20 years, Grand Rapids has seen actual temperatures below -10 degrees only four times, Marino said. Of those four times, two have been in the last two years -- 2014 and 2015.Marino expected temperatures to make it up into the mid-teens on Friday, but a wind in the 15-20 mph range means the real-feel will be colder. That wind will be enough to cause some blowing of snow along U.S. 31 and U.S. 131 Marino said, making visibility difficult at times north of Kalamazoo. With projected temperatures through the end of the month, Grand Rapids is on track to experience one of the top 10 coldest months of February, and possibly among the top five. It remains to be seen whether those projected temperatures will play out as expected through the end of the month, Marino said.E-mail HeidiPayIt - We are live in Grand Rapids!
